Cultism A Secret Society Or An Open Intimidation Society?

The quest to belong to the circle of ‘big boys’ who are feared on tertiary institution campuses as they wield negative influence to pursue inordinate desires have made many students to belong to different confraternity of cults.

The worrying trend in Nigeria nowadays, however, is that even children of primary and secondary school age are being initiated into various cult groups while young artisans of different trades are reportedly finding pleasure in becoming cult members. For example, A 16-year-old secondary school dropout, Ifechukwu Atunanya, was arrested by policemen from the Anambra State Police Command while allegedly having sex with over 52 young men inside a bush in what looked like an initiation ceremony.
According to reports, the suspects were all rounded up in the bush in Awka and are reportedly members of the Supreme Vikings Confraternity, during the initiation of new members.
The issue of cultism in recent time is definitely becoming worrisome. The idea for them, is to basically feel in control within their environment of operations and to show they possess some outward appearance of power which makes people to dread them even as they see themselves as being untouchable,
there is always confrontations among rival groups in a quest to display superiority over each other, often leading to killing and maiming of their target. Now they are every where schools, urban centers, villages and even hamlet that's supposed to be a homogeneous settlement any form of intimidation can be easily expelled.

Politicians in some states in northern region and most southern parts would used the cultists to clamp down their political enemies, destroys ballot papers and boxes during election.

Questions

My question is, if everyone in the society because of the frequent intimidations coming from cultists decided to become members of one of the confraternities we are having in this great country,
would there be anybody to oppress? Would there be anybody to intimidate? Would there be anybody to harass? The answer to the above questions is surely 'No' and such situation would not be good for any civilized human society.
When I was growing up, I was made to believe that occult isn't an open stuff but a secret thing, that is why most people of our parents age calls any of such groups "secret society" but I am very surprise with the level it has changed from secret society to an open intimidation societies, a situation whereby the self acclaimed members of any of the confraternities will harass and intimidate you for wearing virtually every color of clothing or any fashionable materials found on you. Last time when I visited my village, I ran into a secondary school student who was almost killed because he was wearing a green sox   which is the only acceptable colour by his school authority. In this kind of situation reasonable members of the society including the cultists and the potential cultists would be forced to question the educational statuses of members of any group who would want to kill a student who is trying to acquire education to better his life in the nearest future.
The biggest question is, can anybody on the street claim to be a cultist because he or she can afford a particular colour of  sox, hand ban, T-shirt and stop other people from using them? Or is there any initiation rite that needs to be observed? Because the way things are happening in my area it shows that boys who claimed to "Belong" doesn't believe in what they belongs to. Anybody can walk up to them openly and say, as I quote
"Bros, I want get mouth, I beg make me get mouth for this area"
One of them depending on where, when and how you meet them, will reply and say, as i quote
"If you want get mouth, you most bring two live broilers, two cartons of beer and five thousand naira."
I am not in any ways trying to disrespect the real "System Men," but I see what some of the guys doing out there as the highest level of blasphemy to the real game.
